Program Description

The Associate of Arts, Fine Arts, Art History allows the department of visual and performing arts to serve those students seeking either to transfer into a baccalaureate program in art history and/or to work in an art gallery setting. This program stresses critical analysis of art, knowledge and awareness of a variety of artistic traditions, visual literacy, and oral and written communications skills. Students also graduate with hands-on experience planning and executing an art exhibition in the Introduction to Gallery Practices course.

Program Requirements

AA/AS degrees are designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university.  

To earn an AA/AS degree, students must:

  1. Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 (see requirements for graduation.)
  2. Complete a minimum of 15 units within the college.
  3. Satisfy General Education requirements for the AA/AS.
  4. Have no financial or library obligation to the college.

Program Outcomes

Students completing the degree will:

PSLO1: Analyze the formal qualities of works of art and various Fine Arts media using art historical terminology. 

PSLO2: Interpret and discuss art works orally and in writing in the context of culture, society, and individual identity.

PSLO3: Identify and differentiate the works of diverse artists as well as various styles and art movements.

PSLO4: Draw relationships and compare art works in meaning and style.

PSLO5: Acquire basic practical skills essential to working directly with art works.

Transfer Agreements

AA/AS degrees are designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university. General information about general transfer agreements can be found on the Academic Advisement website. Students who intend to transfer to another college or university should speak with a TMCC Academic Advisor and consult with that institution. The transfer institution determines how TMCC courses will transfer. TMCC has agreements with the following institutions towards a bachelor's degree in the same or similar discipline.
