General Education Mission
TMCC values each of the areas listed below for how they contribute to undergraduate education by developing students and workers to be well-rounded individuals with a deeper understanding of the world. We focus on the whole student and prepare students for life-long learning and continuous self-improvement with the goal of adapting to an ever-changing world and work place.
General Education Areas
Communications - Includes the ability to speak, write, listen, and respond to others across genres and modalities. It encompasses understanding the appropriate rhetorical approach and using it ethically, preparing materials for a specific audience, delivering a coherent message, and responding to feedback.
Critical Thinking - Reflects the ways people understand and respond to information. It encompasses formulating multiple levels of inquiry to work through complex issues, evaluating problems and offering solutions. This process results in logical conclusions based on evidence with respect to evolving ideas, new information, and applicable historical and social contexts.
Diversity - Studies members of society and diversity between societies and cultures by drawing connections to historical contexts, issues of equity and access, intersectionality, and evolving social perceptions. It examines elements of culture, ethnicity, sex, race, gender, religion, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, and ability.
Information Literacy - Involves identifying information needs and strategically locating appropriate sources of information. This includes the critical analysis of information, the evaluation of sources for accuracy and biases, and the ethical synthesis of multiple perspectives to create new knowledge and deeper understanding.
People & Cultural Awareness - Develops a broad understanding of linguistic, political, social, environmental, religious, and economic systems. It incorporates adopting skills and habits of mind for civic responsibility and activity, and learning to respect and critique aesthetic and creative processes.
Quantitative Reasoning - Develops proficiency with mathematical and scientific processes. It includes knowing and applying appropriate formulas and models, performing accurate calculations, and evaluating and communicating results ethically. It expresses numerical understanding using a contextually appropriate format and applies the results to real-world needs.
General Education Requirements by Degree
General Education requirements reflect the classification of courses, by discipline, designed to meet the General Education Competencies. The requirements for the AA, AS, AAS, BAS, and BS degrees correspond to those established in Title 4, Chapters 14 and 16 of the NSHE Board of Regents Handbook.
